Why Your Culasse Becomes a Water Trap Before Year 1
The culasse is a horizontal surface by definition. Horizontal EPS surfaces collect water like a gutter—rain pools, standing water seeps into unsealed foam joints, and capillary action pulls moisture backward into the wall cavity. Unlike vertical facade sections where water runs downward quickly, the culasse holds water for hours or days after rain stops. Field experience shows that standard aluminum flashing alone—without a secondary membrane—allows water penetration within 12–16 months because the sealant caulk shrinks, cracks, and separates from the flashing edge.
The culasse also creates a thermal bridge. EPS foam has an R-value of 3.6 per inch; a 2-inch culasse gap sealed only with caulk and air creates a direct path for cold roof air to reach interior framing. That temperature drop triggers condensation inside the wall cavity during cool nights—even if external water hasn’t entered yet. Moisture accumulates silently for weeks before interior rot begins. By the time drywall staining appears, the framing damage is already in motion.
